In the “Cute Gecko” Department

No, no, no. I don't mean the talking gecko everybody has seen (way too much) on tv advertising insurance.

This is a real Mediterrean Gecko, in the pine woods of panhandle Florida, sitting on an almost 100% decayed softball.

Buck thought it was sitting on a dirt-covered light-wood knot.

"Nope," I said. Buck looked at my smug, self-satisfied face. He knew I would enlighten him whenever I was good and ready.

"It's an old softball."

"What? Are you sure?"

"Uh huh. I've been watching it decay for the last year or more. Good guess, though, and a great catch on seeing that gecko. I never would have spotted it in a million years."

  1. OMG. That is one creepy gecko. The stuff nightmares are made of. Have you ever seen Hawaiian geckos? They’re light green with pink and orange and turquoise markings. Disney couldn’t have colored them better.

  2. We have a lot of geckos here in Ariz., but seems they have a smoother skin than that one. They are pink and grey and very reclusive. I always jump when turning over something, and one jumps out. Was your’s just sunning hmself I wonder? Neat!
